Reflections from Danna, October 2026. "The Space Between: cultivating faith in what has yet to emerge"
Holistic Leadership — From the Bedroom to the Boardroom
Exploring how we lead through every area of life—bringing strategy, self-awareness, and the inner work of leadership together
Dear Reader,
October has me thinking about The Space Between—the place between what has ended and what has yet to emerge, and the faith it can take to stay present there.
Last month, I ended with the idea of compost: allowing what has completed its season to become nourishment for what grows next. But there’s a period when what has been released is no longer what it was, and what it will become hasn’t taken form yet. We can create the conditions, tend what needs tending, and then, at some point, trust what is happening beneath the surface. That’s where faith lives.
Whether we look through a religious, spiritual, or scientific lens, there is always more happening than we can immediately see or fully understand. I’ve been thinking a lot about faith lately as a way of moving through life when we don’t have all the answers. And recently, my dreams gave me a rather extraordinary image of what that can feel like.
Two nights in a row this week, I dreamed of places where the familiar boundaries between sea, sky, land, and water disappeared.
In the first dream, I was on a boat traveling farther and farther out to sea. Eventually, we were so far out that I could no longer tell where the ocean ended and the sky began. The colors were extraordinary, almost otherworldly, and there was a sense of heaven and earth blending together. In the dream, I called it the “distal line”—the farthest point from shore.
What stayed with me most was how I felt. I wasn’t afraid at all. I knew I couldn’t see the shore. I knew I was too far out to return or turn around. The only direction was forward, and I had this tangible feeling of peace, clarity, confidence, and calm. There was an embodied knowing that I was safe, and a profound sense of trust.
The following night, the imagery returned in another form. I was riding a bicycle on white pavement that sloped toward the water, almost like a boat launch. The water below was such a clear, pale blue that it blended indistinctly with the concrete. I rode my bike right into the water because I couldn’t tell where the pavement ended and the water began.
In this dream, I was a little embarrassed, but I quickly recovered and asked for help. A couple approached and began sharing stories of their own mistakes. Two nights in a row, my dreaming mind brought me to places where the familiar edges disappeared.
We rely on edges and boundaries to orient ourselves. Ocean and sky. Land and water. What was and what will be. Knowing and not knowing. When those distinctions become blurred, our usual reference points disappear with them. That feels a lot like the space between creations. A relationship has ended, but the next one hasn’t arrived. A career or business is changing, but its new form hasn’t fully revealed itself. We’ve made a decision without knowing where it will lead. An identity, belief, or way of living no longer fits, while what comes next is still taking shape.
These spaces can be deeply uncomfortable. I’ve also found that some of the most uncomfortable, intense, and uncertain spaces can be the most sacred, because they require faith. I’m naturally wired to look for the path—to connect dots, make sense of complexity, and see how things fit. The space between asks something different of me: to stay engaged with what I can influence while making peace with what I can’t.
Maybe that’s the practice—not needing the whole path to be visible before taking the next step. The Field Guide words I’m carrying into October—Surrender, Non-Attachment, and Reverence—feel like three ways of meeting that space.
Surrender – Faith in action.
Surrender is not giving up—it’s giving over to something greater while taking aligned action. In life, it’s choosing faith over fear. In love, it’s being guided by devotion instead of defense. In work, it’s choosing purpose beyond ego and letting service lead. Surrender is the strength to receive what’s greater than you could orchestrate alone.
Non-Attachment – Let go of outcomes.
Non-attachment is releasing control while staying engaged. In life, it frees you from the grip of fear, so you can move with more loving ease. In love, it replaces pressure and demand with spaciousness and possibility. In work, it loosens rigid expectations, opening space for creativity and collaboration. Non-attachment is holding the moment with an open hand, trusting the highest good to emerge.
Reverence – Honor the sacred in all.
Reverence is leadership with humility and awe. In life, it’s recognizing the worth of each moment. In love, it’s cherishing your partner as both human and divine. In work, it’s respecting people, processes, and purpose as intrinsically valuable. Reverence is honoring the sacred woven through all things.
Together, these three Field Guide words offer a way to meet the space between: surrender what we cannot control, loosen our attachment to the outcome, and honor what is here while what comes next takes shape. Which brings me back to compost. Change is happening long before there is anything new to see. What has completed its season breaks down. The earth receives it. Time does its work. And somewhere within a process largely invisible to us, what was becomes nourishment for what will be.
Our lives have seasons like that. There are times to cultivate, build, decide, lead, and act. And there are times to create the conditions, do what is ours to do, and trust what is happening beneath the surface. Again, maybe that’s the practice—not needing the whole path to be visible before taking the next step. Maybe that is what my dreams were showing me. There will be places where the edges disappear. Where we can no longer orient ourselves by what was, and what will be hasn’t taken recognizable form.
And perhaps our work in those moments is to remain present enough to experience the beauty there. To surrender. To loosen our grip. To approach the unknown with faith in what has yet to emerge.
